Prom will be held on April 26 this year, and while the April Fool’s issue of The Smoke Signal may have had some fun with the details, the article does hold some truth. The junior class is responsible for funding the actual prom, while the senior class funds After-Prom.
Fundraising has been slower than expected. “Only 84 juniors have paid their dues,” said junior class sponsor Mrs. Wick. “That puts the junior class at around $3,000, but I’ve already spent some money on decorations. The Riverside Theatre costs $10,000 to reserve plus decorations, so the juniors really need about $12,000.”
Prom won’t be cancelled if juniors don’t pay their dues — the less money juniors raise simply means less will be spent on decorations. The junior class also receives a percentage of the money earned by LifeTouch from Prom photos, which helps offset the shortfall.
The After-Prom, funded by the senior class, will be held at Funland as usual. This year’s theme is “Pirate Cruise to Paradise.” The event features a DJ mix of Pirates of the Caribbean and Jimmy Buffett songs, and will run until midnight. In past years, it has taken hours to set up and transform the conference facility.
The After-Prom committee has purchased thousands of dollars worth of prizes, including hundreds of iPod accessories, Vera Bradley purses, digital cameras, and gift cards from Best Buy, Applebee’s, other local restaurants, and Target. There will also be a money machine, and the raffle will be run differently this year.
One highlight of the raffle: a signed picture of Johnny Depp from a Pirates of the Caribbean premiere will be up for grabs.
Students are not required to have attended Prom in order to participate in After-Prom.
