British scientists fighting bird flu with glow-in-the-dark chicks

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Genetically modified chickens may help British scientists monitor and potentially stop the spread of avian influenza, which hit the United States hard this year.

Chicks are injected with fluorescent green protein, which makes their beaks and feet glow in the dark, which help scientists distinguish them from other birds used during testing.
